have just finished "the last time they met" which i picked up in oxfam the other day ... i read one of hers before: "the pilot's wife" and i am not sure what i think about her ...
her characterisation is persuasive and some of the writing is startlingly good ... but also she sometimes feels cliched and i dont know if over all i think she is something like chick lit with pain for the middle aged ...
the two books i have read have both been lacking in humour which a writer like anne tyler pulls off effortlessly ...
anyone?

I did try 'The Pilot's Wife' once, Fish, but couldn't get on with it (bored me - maybe I should try again).
Anne Tyler!
*reaches over and plucks out 'Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant'*
Been meaning to read this for ages. Thank you! That's my Sunday taken care of!

Me too, love Anne Tyler's work. Especially Accidental Tourist, which has a larger metaphorical element absent from her other novels.
Read one Anita Shreve, The Weight of Water, and enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the Anita Shreve I read - I think it was The Last Time they met.

I have read The Pilots Wife, Last Time They Met, Fortunes Rock and Weight of Water. I enjoy her books immensly and think she writes with insight and passion. My friend and I read Weight of Water after reading Last Time They Met and discovered that most of her books are linked using same characters which can be annoying if you have not read them in the order she wrote them in.
