I think I uderstand the rules... Is it permissible to put up your piece in the normal way to get a bit of trial feedback (if any!) before submitting it for the competition?

That's a rubbish answer, isn't it? The reason for my reluctance is that this comp is as much about criticism as it is about writing. We want people to improve their analytical skills as well as their writing skills.
so - OK, here's the definitive answer. No, you can't. I shall add it to the rules now!
