I need to read something by somebody old. Somebody who's had a hard life. Somebody who has lived amongst winos and whores. Somebody smelly and unshaven. Somebody whose lack of education, chain smoking and early death mean he knew a thing or two. Which Bukowski should I choose?

Well you know what - forget Bukowski and read some Nick Cave - "And the Ass Saw the Angel"
You want down and dirty and here it is.

Ham on Rye every time but Brautogan's Sombrero Fallout is cracking and right up your street, I reckon

Interesting suggestions. I see Sombrero Fallout is back in print now - last time I looked Amazon wanted about £50 for a copy.
Ham on Rye sounds like a literary festival, but I'm probably thinking of Hay on Wye.
Never delved into Nick Cave. Maybe I'll give it a go...
Thank you everybody.
