Whew!
Well... coming on the tail-end of all my recent travails...
The Longmarsh Press (a Devon-based publisher) has just agreed to publish my novel, 'In The Day' :D
They hope to bring it out within the next year (they have another title waiting in the wings ahead of it). It won't be a huge initial print run... and there's no big advance to tide me over, as it's only a small company (so it'll be royalties on sales, as and when). Equally, though, there won't be any agents fees to pay, and no onerous 4 book contracts or anything like that!
But none of that matters. It's being published, it'll be on the shelves... and I'll be able to hold it in my hand and say 'I did that... with a lot of encouragement from the good folk on ABC'.
I can't thank you all enough.

Fabulous news Stan, no one deserves it more than you. I'm envious of course as "Butcher Boy" is with a literary agent who likes it ( good news!) but wants a lot more of it! So far I'm at 40,000 words but need another ten.
I know it's been a long painstaking job, but so glad you made it mate. Keep us all posted about it, you have a good few people on here that will be ordering!
Blessing | July 30, 2012 - 14:43
Well done Stan! Really pleased for you. And jolono, didn't know you'd taken the plunge. Don't envy you having to find another 10k words but I know you're good for it so dig deep!
Stan | July 30, 2012 - 14:45
Thanks, mate... and hey, that's really good news with 'Butcher Boy'. If you've got an agent interested, then that's a big thing. Good luck. I'm sure you can make it. 'In The Day' originally came in at 50,000, but is now at 75,000. Leaving it be for a while and coming back to it showed me where I could round it out and add more depth. You'll find a way.

Excellent news, congratulations Stan. I look forward to seeing it on the shelves. And good luck jolono with your extra words. Out of interest, do you know roughly how many pages of a printed book 50,000 words translates to? I was thinking a novel needed to be 100,000 for some reason. But if 50,000 is a novel then I'm 50,000 words closer to finishing my novel...
Stan | July 30, 2012 - 15:03
Thanks Blessing and Alex :D
Alex... as a PDF document, single-spaced, with 12-point Arial, mine comes out at 143 pages. That's for 75,000 - so 50,000 would be around 95 pages.

Stan you beauty! Well done indeed - this has made my day after hearing about your recent problems with the local simpletons. Can't wait to have a copy in my hands.
Jolono, you'll get there too, hey, it's only another quarter on top of what you already have! ;)

Stan,
I just bought you a notional pint. GETINTHERE
Stan | July 30, 2012 - 18:26
Thanks, everyone. I wasn't really sure if it all held together, and not hearing anything from the agents I sent it out to had me thinking it probably wasn't up to scratch. I've been told it needs some editing, but that's okay. It'll just be nice to have a book, even if it doesn't sell many copies.
blighters rock | July 30, 2012 - 18:47
I'll have a copy, Stan. I love your writing style and you're a decent fella too. Longmarsh are lucky to have on board.

Oh wow! You don't know how happy I am for you - and jealous, all the same! Somehow, though, I'm not entirely surprised that this has happened. It's an amazing book, written by an amazing writer. Congratulations, Stan!! :)
alibob | July 30, 2012 - 20:09
So pleased for you Stan. And hoping one day soon to be able to buy a copy of your book!
shep5377 | July 30, 2012 - 20:11
Fantastic. Absolutely brilliant.
Forget the notional pints, notional shots are on me!
I remember reading the (I think) opening chapter of In The Day and loving it. I couldn't be more pleased.

Stan,
It couldn't have happened to a nicer or more deserving and talented bloke.
What am I talking about...talented writer!
Excellent!

Jolono,
I'm so pleased for you also. Moreover ten thousand words is nothing to conjure up for a master story teller such as yourself. Your difficulty will be to stop at another ten thousand. I am rooting for the two of you and I will definitely be buying from the first print run for both books.

well done stan, very pleases for you
Stan | July 31, 2012 - 18:02
Thank you all so much, you wonderful people! I've just spoken to the publisher, who gave it the acid test of passing it to someone with Borderline Personality for their reaction. Apparently, they couldn't put it down! That's a huge fillip for me. I realise that I've only posted a small part of it on here, so nobody's read it all... but I'm going to have to take it down now. Anyway... I'm going to discuss with Longmarsh getting it uploaded to Amazon for Kindle in advance of the hard copy publication, so I'll keep you all informed. Blimey... this is going to be a long, long year of anticipation...
sue dinum | July 31, 2012 - 18:30
That's really good news, Stan and I must say I'm not surprised. Your publishers have at least realised a deserving talent. Well done and best of luck.

Well done Stan. Let this be the first of many.
Stan | August 2, 2012 - 22:48
Thanks again - Trevor, Julie, Hulsey.
I'm doing my best to be buoyed up by it, but even this isn't working. I can't cope with this circumstance much longer. I've tried everything I can. I feel defeated now.
Denzella | August 3, 2012 - 06:05
Stan, don't let them Bastards rob you of what you have been working so hard to achieve. Then they really are winning.
I don't know what else to say because it will all be inadequate but your friends here on ABC Tales are routing for you.
My offer is there and don't feel threatened...I'm not after your body.
Or am I?
Only joking.
