"The Virus of People"

You mustn’t protest against slander and slight,
you mustn’t retaliate, stand up and fight,
you mustn’t defend what you know to be right,
that’s obsessive, aggressive and wrong.

You mustn’t call foul when their boot’s in your balls,
the ref isn’t watching and no-one recalls.
You mustn’t complain the injustice appals,
that’s obsessive, aggressive and wrong.

You mustn’t use Reason for peace-loving ends
and say “This is stupid. Why can’t we be friends?”
If they don’t want to listen, your Reason offends,
it’s obsessive, aggressive and wrong.

You mustn’t request that they cease their sleepwalking
and take up the civilised practice of talking,
they’ll call the police and they’ll say that you’re stalking,
you’re obsessive, aggressive and wrong.

You have to sit still and pretend it’s all fair,
surrender flag hoisted aloft in the air.
You have to really, really not care,
and be just like everyone else.

You have to say nothing and bow to your fate.
You have to feel nothing, no love and no hate
or any slight kind of emotional state,
and be just like everyone else.

You have to just stomach the virus of people
and feel as much fire as a castrated weasel
and make a grand virtue out of being feeble,
and be just like everyone else.

I liked this poem although I disagree about one thing. I think that people are the infected and perhaps the carriers but not the virus.

I thought it was well written otherwise.
I liked the rhymes and the images, the tone of frustration aswell as the humour and I really agree that its tough when no one listens, no matter how eloquently you speak. You feel almost like a Cassandra, both blessed with prophecy and cursed with never being believed.

But my heart will never let me be silent and I hope that your voice continues forever to shout and grow louder.

It's always a pleasure to see someone's anger being vented in rhyme.

Thanks for your comments.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that my voice will continue to shout and grow louder. That's the general plan anyway.

Blighters, I would forgive, pray and love, but it's not easy to just "let it go" and ignore the fact that you hate an entire species, that the entire human race makes you want to vomit and kill people.

The only solution is the extinction of the human race. I pray that this happens soon.

Well, just don't turn into a crazy shooter. There are plenty of nice people out there.

Archie_Macjoyce | December 17, 2011 - 13:44

Many people who seem nice are in fact the opposite...

well-wisher | December 18, 2011 - 12:46

Archie, I can only speak from personal experience but I think that the majority of human beings, like the majority of life and the world, are a mixture of good and bad.

I think that if we truly look at ourselves in the mirror, we see that theres as much darkness within ourselves as everyone else but that we only tend to see the best in ourselves and the worst in the world.

Life isn't perfect for anyone. There are people who are being tortured; who are prisoners or who are severely physically disabled who still manage see some good in the human race. Whilst there are also people whose problems aren't so terrible who nonetheless think everyone is evil.

I'm always going on about how lovely nature is but I'm completely aware that there are great evils and terrible diseases like the Ebola Virus and Cancer.
I'm just equally aware that the majority of Nature is wonderful. The evening sky; the flowers and trees
and birds and every act of human kindness that I see.

I mean. The human race is big. How many people do you actually know? I'm pretty certain that a million genuine acts of human kindness are taking place every second in the world. Personally, I don't see the point in just focusing upon the cruelties.

I'm only 36 but I think that if you view the world less harshly and take the good with the bad, you are going to meet some genuinely good people. Not saints;
not flawless people; but people who try to do no harm
and genuinely care about others.

Sometimes too, people want to do good but are just afraid because they don't have enough power and confidence to act or speak out.

Archie, really good stuff. I hate seeing signs no matter where you go that verbal abuse to our staff will not be tolerated and we will call the Police etc etc etc. What happened to telling people when they are wrong, have messed up etc. I was in a doctors surgery just a few weeks ago, an elderly man asked if his prescription was ready, the receptionist told him that she had no request for a prescription, after a few minutes of what can only be called " disagreement". he said that the service was disgraceful and pathetic. She told him he was being abusive and threatened to call the police. What nonsense!

Anyway enough of my rant.

Another great poem.

If that was my football boot I apologise. I never was the greatest footballer.

Passionate work

Archie_Macjoyce | December 19, 2011 - 21:58

Lavadis - Ha ha, no, I don't believe the boot was yours. Unless you've spent the last few years hanging around London disguising yourself as various people who disguise themselves.

Jolono - Well, indeed. The moment you complain about anything, people call you abusive and unreasonable.

"Stop kicking me in the eye, you cunt!"
"How dare you swear at me!!!"

Wellwisher - Yes, I do see your point. It gets extremely frustrating though, when you come to realise that there is a casual brutality, a basic lack of concern for human suffering, hovering below the veneer of seemingly most individuals, even the ones who appear to be nice...

If you read my long autobiographical poem 'The End of my Youth' you'll see exactly what I mean.

Thanks for commenting, all of you.

I think this is such a well constructed poem, although I am no expert, however, I am saddened by the content. The first thing I would say is that life is not fair. I don't know anyone that gets all good luck or anyone that gets all bad. As for fairness then I could say it's not fair that you can write so much better than me. It's life and I have to get over it. If you don't like people then take comfort in your talent. It's huge!

I hope that sometime in your future you will find that most elusive thing...happiness!

Archie_Macjoyce | December 31, 2011 - 00:54

Ha ha, thankyou. Happiness is indeed elusive. Generally speaking, no, I don't like people very much, because they've let me down and mistreated me and I generally find human beings disappointing.

Maybe I could take refuge in my talent if more than a handful of people were in the slightest bit interested in my poetry...

Denzella | December 31, 2011 - 07:04

Well, to the rest, as you said to someone else
"Fuck You" seems to fit the bill.

I wish you happiness.
