The Magpie and the Blackbird.

No likes yet ♦

There's a blackbird,
And it's flying between the trees,
Hedgrows bowing and whining,
Against the momentary weight
Of cartilage and feathers.
With a beak full of leaves
And a brain awash with instinct,
The busy worker frantically flits,
Parting the air with
Streamlined finesse.
It's beady black eyes swirling in desperation,
As black and white villains
Tumble through the space,
Between the blackbird and it's
future generation.
Brutal warfare, natures genocide
Played out to the tune
Of crazed, screeching blackbirds,
And the wild sadistic cackle
Of a Magpie,
Taking what's left of the broken eggs
And carrying them away
To feed the evil that breeds
Withing it's own protective castle
Of twigs and mud.

Loved this IW.In fact too many great lines to mention, I would end up repeating the whole thing!

I agree with jolono...great poem, and one I can relate to, very much, at the moment. All the birds in my garden seem to be at war with each other, especially the ducks, would you believe. It's that time of the year, I guess, what with nesting and all.

Much enjoyed.

It is so true that the birds seem to just become vicious around this time of year. In my garden there is a constant feud between Blackbirds and Magpies, hence the idea of writing this.

Thank-you Jolono and Tina for your comments, it's nice to hear!

Inspired, I guess that you can see from my site that birds feature significantly so I was keen to read this and it definitely did not disappoint. Well done.

This is really good, Inspired... While visiting my daughter out West in Alberta, I watched Magpies operate as a team. One would occupy the attention of Susan's watch dog, while another magpie scooped food out of the dog's bowl several feet behind him. Brave. All the best of times in your writing. Richard LP
