The Writer's Lover

from the ABC set A Collection of Nothing In Particular

“My first and only love,
Why won’t you marry me?”

“Honey- baby- I need stability.
You’ve always got your head in a book,
Or a pen in your hand.
And when you’re done
There’s fire in your eyes,
You’re no longer a man.”

“I can’t do anything right,
We don’t need to fight,
I love you with all my heart,
And have done from the start.”

“Your heart, I believe,
But your head, well,
Its faith is in another,
A search for righteousness
I will never understand.
Plus, you’ll never get my mother
To agree to such arrangement,
She too disapproves of your derangement.”

“You know it’s hard
Thinking like this,
Always discovering things
I previously missed;
Don't worry my dear,
I'm on to it now -
If life is a hill,
Then here is the brow.”

“No! Your life is a valley
And the other side is always greener!
You’ve been here before, remember?
Just wait for some time to pass,
And you will wonder why the grass
Looks more luscious on
The other side of the dell.”

“I can’t accept this point of view,
Everything I’ve done’s been for you!
But I must search for intrinsic meaning
All my life it has been my leaning,
Every second since the day of my birth
I have only searched for truth on earth!”

“Can't you see? That’s exactly my point,
With your whole life, the truth you anoint,
How can I compete with the ‘blessed truth’?
The two of you lovers since turbulent youth.”

“Why do you feel as if you are competing?
Love is forever, and truth is but fleeting,
You have shifted a great burden upon me,
How can I get you to see it how I see?”

“I do, my darling,
Don’t you think I’ve been with you?
I’ve supported your heart, strained every sinew,
We’ve been intertwined through
All manner of troubles,
When the walls have collapsed
We’ve both pawed through the rubble,
Every tear you’ve ever cried,
Has burnt my skin like formaldehyde,
And for all of this I’m eternally scared
That you’ll never learn truth is just happiness shared.”

The intrinsic search for meaning in the valley. Truth can be the POV from where you stand. You trace quite a journey here.

Thank you Blessing. I agree, from day to day, we have so many points of view, so our truths are constantly changing...

If only people would see things the way we do, eh? This is turbulent and fiery, a damned good read.

'Love is forever, and truth is but fleeting' - just one of many great lines in this piece. I love how naturally this flows, drawing the reader deep into the conversation.

Throughout this poem there are, for me, two types of phrase: ones that make the mind soar, laced with a beautifully balanced use of poetic device; and the ones that root it in reality - a well used device in itself! The contrast is stark, yet both are equally important here.

Also, this is even more enjoyable on the second read.

Great job!
Steve

Ah Steve thats great, thank you so much for such an in depth comment! I really appreciate it. I wanted to paint the picture of the self absorbed artist protagonist so obsessed with 'the journey' of life, he misses the truth and beauty right in front of him!

Thanks again.
