They are celebrating a murder
whooping and cheering
like New Year’s
or the Champions League.
Like fresh death takes the sting out, makes
old death softer, somehow sweeter
maybe that’s the taste of justice.
But he is still here
have they missed it?
his presence
even in their own ranks.
His heart ached for the spilling of blood
and while we clap and jeer
he is still alive.

Thank you Rachel, that's lovely to hear. I'm just venturing into writing about what I see in day to day life and 'current affairs' so it's very encouraging to find that it resonates...that must be what it's all about x

Such a powerful line:
'Like fresh death takes the sting out, makes
old death softer'
Fab stuff!

A poem all by itself that last comment is, Marion! :)

I wish ABC tales had a 'like' button as Facebook does :)
RachelPatricia | May 9, 2011 - 18:40
Ah, but if it did, people would probably just opt for hitting that rather than commenting, don't you think? It's the comments we get on here that make it all worthwhile, if you ask me. Understand what you mean, though - there's so much good stuff on here that it's hard to comment on everything all the time, so maybe it would come in handy for those of us who are time-restricted... I'll go first:
penandpaperdreams liked this :)

When I was eleven, my English teacher banned me from using the words 'like' and 'nice' since they were so bland! I agree with the fear that if we had facebook 'like' buttons, it would encourage a lazier form of appreciation... besides, we can use much better words in our comments - we are writers, after all!

Commenting on work is essential but I would still like to be able to 'like' your comments!
But you guys are probably right, my comment made me realise how much I've been infiltrated by Facebook culture! If you can call it a culture ha ha x

This poem has an immensely powerful message. People forget that, although this is an achievement for war on terrorism, it's still killing a life, sure a life of a bad man, but a life nevertheless. Death is mankind's last enemy and it shouldn't be cheered for absolutely no one.
I truly appreciate your poem. A well deserved cherry.
Nathan.

Thank you Nathan, I'm glad it resonated with you, I really like your statement 'death is mankind's last enemy'. We seem to be so short sighted and thirsty for retribution that we are feeding the enemy's armies while starving our own.
At least there's still poetry to look forward to.

Excellent poem Marion. I was disgusted yet not surprised to see the cheering crowds gathering outside the white house last week. And then last night I witnessed similar behaviour from sections of fans in the Tyncastle stand when someone decided to attack a football manager on the touchline. It's all shameful.

A brilliant examination of retribution vs justice. A pleasure to read.
"Excuses are the cobblestones on the pathway to nowhere."

Thank you nordicavenger...I just like mercy mercy mercy, maybe not very practical when dealing with war crimes but it's got a lovelier scent than revenge. I like your cobblestones proverb :)
