Chapter 1: Bloodlines
“I’m seriously going to throw up!” I yell as loud as I can. Lux is flying through the sky so fast; the wind break is making it almost impossible to hear myself think. I can feel the pressure shift as Lux begins to get closer to the ground.
Where the hell are we landing? The city is so busy and I watch all the cars driving on the road resembling ants. Recognizing that comparison makes my stomach turn. Oh shit. Were so freaking high!
No longer in the clouds, I see where Lux wants to land. I was anticipating more of a rough landing but we effortlessly press down on the roof of a building a couple of miles away from my home.
I jump off Lux’s back faster than I got on to begin with. Even though he saved my life I can’t help to have my guard up. I take a few cautionary steps away from him but trip on a brick and fall on my ass. I sit in awe as I watch Lux turn back into the man that put me in trance with his beautiful hazel eyes. “Thea.” He gets closer and extends his hand to me.
I ignore his gesture and quickly get on my feet again. “What the hell are you?” I get straight to the point.
“Let me explain.”
“Please do!” I spit angrily.
“My name is Lux Harper. I’m a Morpher." He does a cute sideways grin while he holds both his hands apologetically in the air. "I come from a world called Lost Lands. I left my planet to come to Earth in search for you.”
I'm stumped. “What the hell is a Morpher?” I reply dumbfounded.
“It’s difficult to explain to a human…” I watch him scramble his brain for an answer. “Humans would call us shape shifters.”
“Okay but what do you want with me?”
“I’m going to be honest with you but I don’t want you to fear me. It’s really important that you understand I would rather die than let anything happen to you Thea.” His words comfort me and I truly feel he won’t hurt me. I nod my head letting him know he can continue.
“Initially I was sent here to assassinate you by King Wake twenty years ago." He takes a pause and checks out my reaction. My face is frozen in place."
"I disguised myself as what you humans call a dog. I walked up to you and your aunt at the park and tried my best for you to like me. I had no collar so your aunt took me in. I remember I was going to make my attack on you the moment we stepped inside your house but then something happened.”
“What?” I blur out, obviously hanging on his every word.
“Your Aunt Mona asked you what you should call me. You grabbed my face with your small, delicate hands and named me Lux."
"I was so surprised that you guessed my real name. You were only about five years old but I felt like you saw pass the eyes of a dog and saw the real me. Weird I know."
"You made me sleep with you in your bed and rested your small head on my back. Ever since then I knew I couldn’t go through with killing you.”
I try not to get distracted by his heartwarming story and focus on the fact that he’s an assassin for a King in a different world. “But what does King…”
“King Wake.”
“Yeah him. Why does he want me dead?” I ask confused.
“Now this might be a little hard to believe but I’m just going to come out and say it.” Lux warns.
“Your father, Prince Nico came to Earth rebelling against the King. While he was here he met your mother, Tally Snow. They fell in love and Prince Nico brought Tally with him back to the Lost Lands."
"Word of their union reached the King and he was livid. You see a long time ago King Wake set a law that Morpher’s and humans couldn’t fall in love. He described it as mudding the blood. King Wake is obsessed with having every man and women in his kingdom to be pure bloods.”
I begin to laugh hysterically. What the hell is wrong with me? This isn’t seriously happening. This is some shit I would read about in a book or see in a movie. This isn’t seriously happening right now.
I begin to pinch my arm as hard as I can. This is just a dream! I continue telling myself. I can feel my pulse accelerating again.
“Thea what are you doing? Stop!” Lux grabs my hands and restrains me. I look down at my arm and it’s completely red. “What’s going on in that head of yours?” Lux presses.
I close my eyes and shake my head from left to right. “This is just a dream.” I say out loud this time. “It’s just a dream.”
I feel Lux pull me towards him and the warmth of his body presses against mine. “I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you are awake Thea.”
With my cheek still pressed against his chest. “What happened to my parents?”
I can feel the muscles in his arms tense up and suddenly he pushes me away from him and sends me flying to the edge of the roof. Before I hit the ground I land on my feet. “What the—” But I see now why Lux pushed me away. A woman standing at about six feet, holding a purple sword in her left hand, stands in front of Lux.
“Amelia!” Lux gasps.
“Surprised to see me Harper?” The red headed woman sneers. “I saw what you did to Alexander. I didn’t think you still had it in you.”
“I don’t want to hurt you Amelia but I will.” Lux pulls out his gold sword. “Back off.”
Amelia strikes first.“Not my style.” She’s much faster than Lux and Alexander put together. I can see Lux struggling to keep up. I need to get the hell out of here. I look around the roof for the exit.
Suddenly, Amelia lands right in front of me. “Where do you think you’re going?” She bares an evil smile while I see the tip of her purple blade puncture my right shoulder.
I scream in agony for the first time in my life. I’ve never felt real pain until now. I can feel she’s pushing hard to make the blade dig deeper into my flesh but I also notice she’s struggling.
The sound of Lux growling distracts us both. Amelia turns away from me and checks behind her. But it’s too late; Lux has his hands around her waist. I watch the blade disappear into the handle of her sword and then Lux tosses her through the air so fast that I would have missed it if I blinked. With the sword now out of me, my knees buckle under my weight and I fall to the floor. “Oh shit! Thea are you okay?”
I scream out loud again. I can feel the pain lingering from my wound. Lux watches the blood coming from my wound in shock. “What is it?” I ask.
“Nothing.” He changes his facial expression quickly to not alarm me. “I just never get use to seeing red blood is all.”
“Who the hell was that?” I gasp.
“Amelia, she’s Alexander’s girlfriend.” Lux explains. “She’s pissed that I killed him.”
“How does she even know you killed him?”
“If a Morpher dies on Earth, his or her corpse will appear in our world.” Lux helps me stand and I try to ignore the pain from my shoulder. “We need to take care of that wound. It could be fatal.”
His words alarm me. “What are you talking about, fatal?”
“We need to get out of here.” He ignores my outburst. “It’s too easy for them to find us here.”
“How can they find us?”
“You’re not going to want to hear this Thea but we need to go to my world.”
“What?” I gasp. “So they can really kill me?”
“You don’t understand Thea. Morpher’s can sense their own kind. You and I are the only Morpher’s on this rock. If we go back to my planet it will be almost impossible for them to find us.”
“If that was the case then why didn’t I stay in your world to begin with?” I challenge him.
“Your mother wanted you to grow up on Earth. If you were to have lived in my world, your ability would have been triggered early on and you would have known you were different than everyone else.
There’s no magic on Earth, which is why your ability hasn’t be triggered yet. I guess your mother wanted the same upbringing she had for you.” His words are cut short. I feel his muscles tense up again. “She’s back.” He gasps as he turns around.
I follow his eyes and they land on a red bird, the size of an ostrich, flying towards the roof. “You need to jump Thea.” Lux warns.
I look over the roof of the building and stare at the long way down. "No I'm good." I know these buildings. My best friend Yoko lives on the building next to this one. These buildings are at least forty stories high. I can feel my heart pounding in my ears and my adrenaline pumping in my veins is almost unbearable.
“Don’t be scared.” Lux presses. “Your half Morpher, you can survive the jump!”
“I can’t do it!” I whale terrified, not being able to move an inch.
I face the bird again and I watch it transform into Amelia. She’s falling to the ground with her sword pointed downwards like she will puncture the concrete floor. I can read the determination in her eyes.
As her sword makes impact with the ground, Lux grabs onto my arm and flings my body at an incredible speed towards the building next to us. The glass of the window I make impact with shatters and my body rolls onto the floor of the apartment until a wall forces me to come to a stop.
I look up and watch an old Japanese couple sitting at a dinner table. The woman begins to scream to her husband but he just watches me in shock.
I stand up as fast as I can and stick my head out of the broken window. The ground begins to shake uncontrollably and then following it, every window on the building Lux and Amelia are on begin to shatter. I stare at the ground and in-between both buildings; a large crack on the ground begins to erupt. She created an earthquake.
I follow the hysterical couple out of their apartment and into the hallway. All of the other residents are fighting each other to make it to the staircase.
“Thea!” The sound of Yoko’s voice makes me almost cry. I feel her hand grab my arm and pull me into her apartment. When she stares at the wound on my shoulder her jaw drops. “Oh my god what happened to you?”
“We need to get out of here!”
“It’s just an earthquake. It’ll pass.” She adds.
“Come here!” The sound of Amelia’s voice interrupts Yoko and I. She enters the apartment through Yoko’s window, holding her purple sword.
“Who the hell is that?” Yoko stares at me confused.
“Get out of here.” I push her towards the exit but then I feel Amelia’s hand grasp my neck, forcing me into the wall. She holds her blade up to my neck but before she can slit my throat a wooden chair smashes into her back causing her to drop her sword.
“You filthy human!” Amelia growls at Yoko and charges towards her. Amelia swings her right fist but Yoko ducks out of the way and trips her. Amelia sits up from the floor but Yoko knees her as hard as she can in the face. I bet Amelia didn’t expect for humans to be able to defend themselves. I think about all the years I took martial arts with Yoko and I feel it was preparation for this very day.
I look at the purple sword on the ground next to me and grab it as fast as I can. I make it across the room in seconds and lift the sword as high as I can above Amelia.
I reach her body and bring down the blade into her stomach with all the strength inside me. Amelia’s eyes grow wide and she coughs up blue blood. I try to dig the sword deeper into her flesh but it’s very difficult. It feels like trying to puncture a metal wall with a toothpick.
Then an evil grin forms on Amelia’s face. I watch her teeth covered with blue blood as she laughs at me. Then Yoko covers my hands with hers and pushes down on the sword making the blade go all the way through Amelia’s body. I watch the life leave her eyes and then suddenly Amelia and her sword turn into white dust.
“Oh shit!” The sound of Lux’s voice grabs out attention. He stares at us in shock from Yoko’s window.

Really liking this. In the prologue, I commented that I loved all the morphing and wanted to be a shapeshifter when I was little- now the story gets going and it's all about a race of shapeshifters called Morphers! It also reminds me a little of my favourite film, 'Spirited Away,' have you seen it by any chance?
'“I can’t do it!” I whale terrified,'- should be 'wail.'
I'm only an amateur and there's plenty of room for improvement in my own stuff, but if I may repeat some advice another ABC'er (oldpesky) gave me; look out for words that crop up too often. The verb 'watch' appears a lot in this chapter, which is quite a stationary-sounding verb, and with such a fast-paced narrative sometimes it doesn't quite fit.
I really admire your creativity- I always seem to write about mundane, day-to-day stuff. You've inspired me to try and be a bit more imaginative! Thanks!
