The Rider

from the ABC set Poems of the Harvest Year

Where? said the moon that started to cry.
How? said the sun that melted the ground.
Who? said the river that refused to run.
Me, said the rider as dry as the bone.

Why? said the dust that flew from the valley.
Where? said the eagle that burned through the night.
When? said the burrow that swallowed the sky.
Now, said the rider and took up his gun.

No, said the spider that drew from the sand.
I do, said the elk that drank from a river of sleep.
Now? said the the fire that leapt from darkness below.
Yes! said the rider and pointed his gun.

Why? said the sparks that shot from the breath.
No, said the blood that stained the red earth.
Truth, said the dust that trembled beneath.
I shall, said the rider who let down his gun.

Where? said the thunder without his sound.
Here, said the preacher that read out the hymn.
Gone, said the coffin that closed with the drum.
Goodbye, said the rider, goodbye and goodnight.
