Turn your eyes from
the labyrinth of limbs
curling in the mass graves,
knowing that hours before
they had been people
congregated
in a silent silver sea
at the ‘appell’.
Ignore the cries
of those caged in cattle cars
and the poisoned sighs
of the gas chambers.
Trap your tongue
behind your teeth
whenever it moulds
the words;
Treblinka
Bergen-Belsen
Dachau
Auschwitz
Because surely nothing like this
could ever happen again.

i would cut the last line? i think without it, the question is implied - the question appears in the readers mind after reading the poem.

Hi there, Magic.
I have to agree with ld, i.m.o. the last line is superfluous and somehow dilutes what is otherwise an extremely powerful poem.
I must admit also, when I first read it, I had not noticed this line at the end. If I had, I would have echoed ld's words, without a doubt.
I like your astute variation on the theme of 'hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil'.
No one really knows the origin of this phrase. Some say it comes from Japan in a place known as the Sacred Stable, where there is a carving of three wise monkeys. and that the monkeys were carved as a visual representation of the religious principle, if we hear, see, or speak no evil, we ourselves shall be spared evil.
Back to your poem again and I consider this another extremely worthy piece to add to your impressive collection. Well done!

It's been snipped :) Thank you so much for your feed back girls! And I completely agree, sometimes I forget to make the reader do a little work themselves!

'the labyrinth of limbs
curling in the mass graves,'
For some reason these lines scare me- they're great! As is the poem ;-)
Nathan.
