Scared to death
of asking
and hearing the truth,
walking in on grief.
It's not how we do things,
not our way,
an awkwardness
best avoided.
Better to leave alone,
let them manage,
don't intrude
or embarrass.
They're friends,
they're family,
but just for now
they're untouchable.
But rely on us,
on the day,
to do the right thing
and know what to say.

I'm not sure the last line works/ or is necessary. Don't know. Just a thought. It changes the whole tone.

an interesting piece, I like the line "but just for now they're untouchable", very provoking

Thanks.
I loved your 'Even in death you look pretty'.
