Hostel

from the ABC set reverie

I stepped into a whole new world,
Memories of my home twirled,
Never knew what life meant,
Never knew the true world’s scent,
Never knew how sweet was home,
How gifted I was under its dome!
Missed my sweet mum and dad,
But the new home made me glad!
Met new people, made new friends,
Never wanted the new life to end!
But now I know, life’s true meaning,
I’m no longer a tiny weakling,
I have grown strong, from the inside,
And hostel has been my potent guide.
I laughed, cried, sighed and smiled!
The aura of happiness never died!
Birthdays form the best part,
Spreading joy and cheer in every heart!
Not a single moment to feel aloof,
With so many friends under the same roof!
Erupting from the swish of a magic wand,
There’s always someone to lend a helping hand!
Can never forget those encouraging pats,
Silly nightouts and unending chats!
Learnt to adjust, care and share,
Gloomy days are eternally rare!
Can never forget those beautiful days,
On a walk down the memory lane!

a lovely poem with a very strong message of how to enjoy the good times and forgive the bad times. This is what hostels were intended for.
Positive and vibrant, your outlook makes me feel a bit ungrateful for my own thoughts and memories of the YMCA. Without it, this has helped me realise that I'd have been totally broken on the streets.
Thanks
Richard

ps. Why not send this in to Emma Field, who does the Streetlights prose/poetry section at the Big Issue.
There's an abundance of darkness, but this is light and very honest
