A Robin on a Sprig of Holly

from the ABC set Silver Spun Sand Poems

Your glass of wine
stands untouched,
as does mine.

Because you’re not here
the candle wept wax
on my best linen cloth.

It doesn’t matter;
the only thing that does –
you never showed.

Don’t even mind
the turkey I cooked
burned to a frazzle...

Or the hassle
to make a Yorkshire
so it rose to greet you
at half-past one…
when you'd always drop by.

Just a card
would have been nice,
but I’ve still got last year’s
in the drawer somewhere.

Yes – here it is;
a robin on a sprig of holly.
I’ll pop it back down
on the mantelpiece.

For a moment,
I sensed your smile.
Losing my marbles,
perhaps.

It’s cold in here – fresh
out of logs, though,
for the fire.

Maybe, just a taste
of that Bordeaux
might warm me up.

So, here’s to us –
and Auld Lang Syne.
Happy Christmas, son.

You never said a truer word, shoe. Most of us, I suspect.

Thank you for reading, and glad you liked it;-) Have a sunny weekend and let's hope they're wrong about more snow.

I bet you do, Magic. It was one of those poems I just could not get right and has morphed, somewhat, since the original version. I rethought it, rewrote it and retitled it and at last, I seem to have got there.

My thanks to you, as always.
