The Angel's Silence: Part Four

Everyone circled around her, trying to see what was wrong.
No one knew what, though.
Except she was turning blue.

The school nurse did the best she could, but she did not know what else to do.

The ambulance was called, and was there quickly.
Maya was rushed to nearby Grazia Salvifica hospital.
Rayna called her parents to tell them what had happened.
They quickly got into their vehicle and rushed to see her.

Rayna road in the back of the ambulance with Maya.

"Her stats are dropping."
Said one paramedic to another

"She's not breathing."
Said the other

Rayna tightly held Maya's hand, and whispered into her ear,
"It's going to be all right. I promise you that. I'm here with you."

They finally arrived at the hospital, but as soon as they did, Maya's heart stopped beating.

Doctor has rushed to find the defibrillator.
They began shocking her heart several times, but nothing seemed to happen.
She was dying.

Finally, after the fifth shock, the monitor showed a rhythm.
They saved her, barely.

Just then, Dana and Antanas arrived.
They ran through the hospital as fast as they could, looking for Maya.

The hospital was so busy that no one would stop to help them. They started looking for her themselves, when they saw Rayna. She walked them to where the doctors were working on Maya, but they would not allow anyone in the room.

Dana was frantic, calling everyone she knew.
Antanas was too busy questioning Rayna to do anything else.

"Now explain to me again exactly what happened."
He said

"I told you already three times.
She was late for math class, and as soon as she entered the room, she just collapsed. That's all I know."
Responded Rayna

"You know, every time you two are together, something bad happens to her."
Said an angry Antanas

"What are you saying?"
Asked Rayna

"I know you have always been jealous of your sister. She was the one with all the friends. I don't think you have ever had a friend in your life."
Said Antanas

"I cannot believe what I am hearing right now. I know that you are angry, and you have every right to be. However, you do not have the right to blame me for this. I love Maya, and would never do anything to harm her. I am always trying to help her."
Said an increasingly angrier Rayna

"This is so typical of you, Rayna. Never wanting to take responsibility for your action. Instead, you prefer to blame them on somebody else. You are her older sister. It is your job to watch out for her when we're not around."
Said Antanas

"What do you mean 'older?'
We're twins!"
She said

"Yes, older. You are almost 10 minutes older than she is. You always did have to be first with everything."
Said Antanas

"I cannot believe I am hearing this from my own father. Maybe if you were home more often you would know more. We may not get along 100% of the time, but we are identical twin sisters. There can be no closer bond between two people."
Said Rayna, almost in tears

"Look, all I am saying is that if you paid more attention to her, this wouldn't have happened."
He then walked off

Rayna was so upset.
Her own father was accusing her of trying to kill her sister.
Rayna wished that it were her lying in the hospital bed, and not Maya.

Dana and Antanas sat next to each other in the waiting room, waiting for the doctors to come out and tell them what was wrong with their daughter.

Nearly two hours, one finally did.

"Mr. and Mrs. Alekseev?
Hi, I am Dr. Abelló.
We are still not sure exactly what happened to your daughter. We think she may have been poisoned with Cyanide, but we do not know that for sure. We are doing blood tests just to make sure, but we are almost certain that is what it is. We have already begun treating her for it.
First, we gave her amyl nitrite, followed by intravenous sodium nitrite. Then, intravenous sodium thiosulfate.
We usually do not start treatment before we know for sure what it is, but we had no choice. She was dying, and that was our only hope.
Right now, her vitals are stable, and she seems to be responding well to treatment. "

They Alekseev's were shocked. They never expected "poison" to be the cause of their daughter's illness.

"There is still more bad news."
Said Dr. Abelló

"The poison was so strong that it cut off oxygen to the baby, and it died. I'm sorry."

"Excuse me?
What do you mean 'baby?'
Maya was pregnant?"
Asked a confused Dana

"Yes, ma'am.
I was not aware that you did not know.
I'm sorry."
Said Dr. Abelló before walking away.

The Alekseev's were in even more shock than before. They had no idea that Maya was pregnant.

Antanas got up and immediately went to find Rayna. She had been missing since the last time he spoke to her. He assumed that if anyone knew Maya was pregnant, it was her.

He looked, and found her wandering around.
He walked up to her and shouted,
"How dare you not tell us that Maya was pregnant?"

"Maya's pregnant?"
She asked

"No, not anymore. She had a miscarriage.
Who is the father? Is it that Brent kid?"
Asked an angry Antanas

"I don't know. I didn't know she was pregnant."
Insisted Rayna

"Don't lie to me!"
Shouted Antanas

Just then, a male nurse walking by asked,
"Is everything all right here?"

Antanas then just walked away, leaving Rayna more confused than ever.

"How could she be pregnant and not tell me about it?"
She asked herself while contemplating what to do next.

Hours had past, and Maya was still unconscious.
The test results had finally come in.
Sure enough, it was Cyanide poisoning.
It was not a high enough dosage to kill her.
Whoever did this, clearly did not know what they were doing.

More hours had past, and it was now 4:38 am.
Dana and Antanas had both fallen asleep, but Rayna was still awake, wandering the halls.
Wondering who could have done this.

The thought that maybe Maya did this to herself because she wanted to kill either herself or the baby did enter her mind a few times, but was quickly dismissed.

"I know my sister, and I know that she would have never done this to herself."
She said to herself.

Maya finally awoke.
She was confused as to why she was in the hospital.

"Mom?"
She cried out after she noticed her sleeping next to Antanas on a chair.

Dana woke up immediately, and went to see Maya.
All the commotion woke up Antanas and they both were with her.

"Mom, Dad, what happened? Why am I here?"
Asked Maya

Dana answered,
"You collapsed at school.
The doctors say you were poisoned.
Do you remember anything suspicious that could help us find out who tried to kill you?"

Maya shook her head.
"No. Someone wanted to kill me?"

"That's what it looks like."
Answered Antanas

"Why does the back of my left arm hurt so much?"
Asked Maya

A nurse was in the room, and went to check on Maya's arm.
She was surprised at what she saw.

There was a large bruise, and around it was severally swollen.

The doctor was called in to look at it.

"How could we have missed this before?"
He asked himself while examining her arm

"There appears to be a puncture wound here. This must be where the Cyanide was injected at."
Said the doctor

"Maya, do you know how this happened?"
Asked the nurse

"All I can remember was, I was leaving history class when I saw my boyfriend waving at me to come to him. He asked me if I would like to meet him at his place tonight. When I told him 'no' that I had to study, he seemed to have gotten angry. As I walked off to get my next class, I felt a sharp pain in my arm. The last thing I remember was walking into Math class, and seeing Rayna staring at me. Giving me that 'Where have you been?' look."

Antanas looked over at Rayna, who was standing in the doorway, and gave her an apologetic look.

She clearly could not have done it if she was in the classroom at the time she was poisoned.

There was a moment of silence before Dana said,
"I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but you had a miscarriage."

Maya put her head down in shame.
"You know I was pregnant?"

"Yes. The doctor told us.
Why didn't you say anything to us about it? You know we would have understood."
Asked Dana

Maya bit her bottom lip.
She was not sure how to answer that question.
However, she tried to anyway.

"It was an accident. We were careful.
Once I told him that I was pregnant, he flipped out and dumped me.
He said that I did it on purpose so he would have to marry me."

"That's terrible!"
Said Dana

"It is terrible, but I guess I could understand why Brent would have been scared. He is only 17 years old. Nevertheless, it is still no excuse for him to have done what he did. Leaving you all alone at this time."
Added Antanas

"Brent?"
Questioned Maya

"Brent wasn't the father."

Everyone looked back and fourth at each other in confusion.

"If Brent isn't the father, than who is?"
Asked Antanas

"Almost three months ago, Brent and I got into a huge fight, and he said it was over. I was so angry that when Yulian Demurtas asked me out I accepted. He was my rebound, I guess, and I ended up getting pregnant from him.
Once he dumped me, Brent wanted me back, and I really did not want to be alone then, so I took him back. I told him the baby was his, and he believed me until he started doing the math and realized that was impossible, or I would be a lot more pregnant than I was. He was furious with me. I told him the truth that night after Rayna saw us together at school that day.
He called me a 'whore' and said he never wanted to see me again.
I traveled to Santo Sussurra looking for Yulian. I knew that is where he would be hiding. I told him that he had to take responsibility for this baby. He refused, and said it probably was not even his.
I could not go home and face you.
I knew you would be ashamed of me. I'm sorry."

Maya, at this point, was in tears.

Dana tried to comfort her.
"I'm sorry that all this had to happen to you.
We would have understood, really."

"I just can't believe my baby is dead. I was just getting used to the fact that I was going to be a mother."
Said a tearful Maya

Antanas got up off the bed and headed out of the room, when Dana said,
"Where are you going?"

He answered,
"To the police.
It all makes sense now."
