A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
A night light carried by a mother to a child
Frightened face of one so mild
There are others whose mothers worry
What might happen if they don’t hurry
Frozen kisses on cheeks still warm
In this parting our lives are torn
Children and babies handed down
Then the ladies who must not drown
To sit in lifeboats floating on air
This ‘unsinkable’ ship in despair
Suspended above the icy waters
Mothers, sons and frightened daughters
We watch them descend from the spars
Collective eyes glint moon and stars
Thickened steel and rivets rending
Bow and stern cruelly bending
A blasting furnace spits and sighs
As we all say our last goodbyes

Thanks very much, jolono, but I've just spotted Tina (Silver Spun Sand) has just posted a poem in the same vein and with the same title so I'm wondering now if I should change the title.
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

Hello Trev,
I think this poem is wonderfully descriptive and yes very topical.
I love the two lines beginning 'Thickened steel...cruelly bending.'
Maybe you should change the title or just tweak it a bit because it would be a crying shame for this poem to get missed or overlooked.
Absolutely loved it.

Hi Trev,
I got quite choked up reading this poem.
You managed to capture the feelings and
the scene so well. It definitely brought
a tear to my eye, as I read it three times.
Great stuff.
Jenny.

Thank you, Jenny, but I hope it didn't upset you for too long. Such a compliment to say you read this three times. Are you a glutton for punishment?
Lots of love.
