THE SCRUNCHED-UP BUNDLE OF JOY
The lady doctor said
your baby has Downs Syndrome
we were stood outside the ward
what is it, exactly, I said?
I was the husband you see
I didn’t know and I
needed to know
It’s only a condition she said
your daughter is perfectly happy
healthy and beautiful
Through the windows of the double doors
I could see Rose holding our baby
Looking adoringly at it and
There were tears in her eyes
That’s when I knew that...
Rose loved that tiny scrunched-up bundle
More than anything in the world
And in time I would somehow learn...
To do the same
