When I Am Thirteen

from the ABC set 2005-2006

When I was one, I couldn't talk or run
And just dribbled on my bib all the day.
When I was two, I screamed my face bright blue
And kicked my mummy's shins to get my way.
When I was three, I bounced on granddad's knee
And heard a scary tale, then wet the bed.
When I was four, I laid down the law
And wouldn't do a thing my daddy said.
When I was five, I felt I'd always be alive
And ran across the road without a care.
When I was six, I just played games and tricks
And thought that girls were boys, with longer hair.
When I was seven, I still believed in heaven
And prayed to God to keep me safe from school.
When I was eight, I hung about with my mate
And strutted in my hoodie, gangsta cool.
When I was nine, I crossed a very fine line
And could have ended up an ASBO boy.
When I was ten, I found a friend in my pen
And wrote about the sadness and the joy.
When I was eleven, I wished I could go back to seven
And never have to deal with puberty.
Now I am twelve, I take my toys down from the shelves
And throw them in the rubbish, finally.

When I am thirteen, will I still be hurting?
