The Night Circus
by Erin Morgenstern
What circus only opens at night? What circus has the power to manipulate reality? What circus is the prodigal son of the nineteenth and twentieth century? Le Cirque des Rêves, ladies and gentleman, The Circus of Dreams and it is the ultimate aesthetic experience.
The plot begins in nineteenth century New York and does not stay there. There is not only an interchange of location but also time periods. The entire extravaganza is a contest between two young illusionists, Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair. At the tender ages of six and nine, Celia and Marco train to compete against each other in a generation old game constructed by their respective mentors, Prospero The Enchanter and Alexander. The game is about permanence, endurance and time. The weapon of choice is magic. The venue is the circus. The audience is you and me. And death determines a winner. But when Celia and Marco become slaves no longer to the wishes of their mentors but to their emotions and their emotions of each other, the ultimate price to pay for this love is far much greater than the trouble of sin itself.
It makes you curious. It excites you. It intimidates you. It opens at nightfall and closes at dawn, It is Le Cirque des Rêves. It is at a location near you.
