One sci-fi tale set in an original universe. Carl "Maniac" Tyler is a private in the Colonial Defence Forces of the Independent South African Republic, serving as a rookie fighter pilot on the frontier world of Ubantu Prime.

His quiet posting is violently interrupted when a group of raiders known only as "The Darkers" attack the planet, forcing the panicked evacuation of its civilian population and decimating its meagre defence force.

In the shadow of the wrecked carrier, five starfighters hung motionless in the darkness as beneath them a destroyer with blackened and scorched hull plates moved between them and the planet below.
