The Significance of Handbags

I have finally got around to reading an article I pulled out of last Wednesday's Times, which was left lying around in the work's canteen. It was about handbags, so being a man I was naturally intrigued. It speaks about how in the 1920's, when you ladies decided it was time to start going out, having fun and so forth, without your chaperones, the quaint little so-called "clutch came about, in which you could carry a few girly bits and bobs (cigarettes, lipstick cash). Throughout the course of the twentieth century, as ladies approached the status of men (more or less), gained more freedoms and concurrently were expected to take on more and more responsibilities (high-powered businesswoman, parent, fashionista¦), handbags grew in size, practicality and ultimately superseded shoes in becoming the "ultimate fashion accessory ' such that they are (in the words of the Times article) "currently the size of a skirt (a deceptively simple observation, which, I'm sure you will agree, has numerous hidden connotations).

I don't want to ask the obvious, clichéd question of, what do you keep in your handbag? ' because that would be¦ well¦ a cliché (and I'm sure it has been done here recently). I do, however, want to say, how do you ladies feel about your handbags? Are they a symbol of your emancipation or merely practical necessities? Do you love and adore your handbag like it is your own child? Or does it weigh you down, like¦ well, your own child?

Before you answer these questions, I just want to leave you with a quote from the aforementioned article¦

In the name of research I approach a statuesque young man stepping out of Vogue House, wearing skin-tight jeans and a simple t-shirt seemingly free of any functional pockets. "Where, if you don't mind me asking, do you keep your wallet and phone? He points to a demure blonde in his shadows, straining under the weight of one familiar Fendi Spy. "My girlfriend has them in her handbag.

I was hoping for something a little more philosophical... If you could perhaps expand on this point, Monsieur Yan... ? [[[~P~]]] ... What is "The Art of Tea"? ... (www.pepsoid.wordpress.com - latest... "Disappearing Robots")

The All New Pepsoid the Second!

Speaking just for me, my bag (couldn't call it a handbag as it has a shoulder strap and looks more like a multi-function army bag) is purely functional: it's comfortable, has lots of pockets and zips, in which I hide my 'necessities': mobile phone(s), pen, wallet, gum, phone charger ('cos I'm always forgetting to do it at home), keys, and a few items of makeup: mascara, some rollerball eyeshadow, eyeliner, and hand cream. Usually there is a layer of old receipts floating around in the various pockets, which I diligently empty every so often. I *do* have a very nice Coach black leather handbag a friend gave me for a birthday some years ago, and an old beat-up tan leather bag, which is slightly larger; but I seldom use them. I don't care if my bag doesn't match my shoes or earrings or whatever, although my friend Specs pointed out to me that the backpack I was wearing did *not* go with the glamourous black dress coat I just purchased... Um, no redeeming philosophy about it, peps...
So you don't feel "oppressed" or "liberated" by your non-hand-bag, then, AG? (do you think perhaps the writer of the Times article was reading too much into things?) [[[~P~]]] ... What is "The Art of Tea"? ... (www.pepsoid.wordpress.com - latest... "Disappearing Robots")

I feel neither oppressed nor liberated, peps. People have been carrying stuff in bags since they figured out it was easier than carrying a bunch of flints in their hands. I can't speak for other women, however. I don't attach too much importance to those things which the media would have us feel are 'important' to women nowdays. Like handbags. Especially expensive ones. Mine cost three quid at Oxfam, which is about all I'm willing to pay.
Flints? In bags? Would that be Gucci or one of those re-usable 10p ones from Sainsbury's? [[[~P~]]] ... What is "The Art of Tea"? ... (www.pepsoid.wordpress.com - latest... "Disappearing Robots")
