Eurovision blunder

The announcement of the winner of a TV phone-in has become a bit of a cliché. Big build up . . . long, long pause . . . dramatic announcement.

On Saturday evening I was watching the BBC's Make Your Mind Up show which chooses the UK's Euro entry when it got to that bit.

The vote was between two acts: a French solo singer called Cyndi and a group called Scooch.

We had the big build up and the long, long pause. Then Terry Wogan, supposedly an old TV pro, announced the WRONG WINNER.

For a moment Cyndi couldn't believe her luck. Her dream had come tue. Then it turned to nightmare, as Fearne Cotton, Terry's co-host, corrected him to announce that the winner was Scooch.

Scooch's song is a cheesy ditty in which group memebers dress up as cabin crew, wheel refreshment trolleys around and take the long-suffering viewer on a 3-minute Euro flight.

If it were from Turkey we'd all guffaw at these ludicrous foreigners, but because it's our entry we'll have to rationalise it as ironic camp.

I guess since we're never going to win the Euro contest again, we might as well try to undermine it with a ludicrous song.

I didn't see it (honest) but it's a brilliant gaffe on top of all the phone vote rubbish that's been going on. Now TV needs to re-build its link with the viewer - it's lost the trust that we used to have in it. An end to reality TV and a return to documentary? I wish...
How did we survive without YouTube? Tony, in case you still haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch55p8Y_MCQ
Er, Fearne Cotton announced the winner as Scooch at the same time as Woegorn said Cyndi, so its not as controversial as you make it out to be, Brooosh. It's more a justification for putting the deaf Woegorn down (along with Brooosh Forsythia) than an accusation of vote rigging. Anyway, she was French so BOOOOOO! :-) The 'best' song, i.e. one that might do well in the wake of Finland's stunning (and best song ever in the eurovis (imo)) was by the Big Brovaz. Scooch will poop.
and if you don't believe me watch Fearn on the vid you posted very carefully.
Who said anything about vote-rigging? But it seems the moans of a twisted, bloated-looking, huffy old(ish) rock clown have made it to the tabloids, and the current controversy surrounds Scooch using backing singers off-stage...which, apparently, is allowed. How many off-stage backers are allowed? Four? Then, how do we know if the performers are doing any singing at all? Yes, Who, Tel and Cotton did do a one-two-three on the announcement, but the synchronised reveal got weird: Tel was louder, and Cotton -- slightly bewildered -- just sort of said, "Sco...". Cyndia hardly reacted, being on Fearne's side, wondering what the hell was going on. Scooch only heard Tel say "Cyndia", and clapped magnaminously, until Fearne said, "No, Scooch!". Then they went all hands over mouths. It was great, Fox-'n'-Fleetwood reminiscent farce TV. A great choice of expert panel: John Barryman, an American actor who can sing a bit ; and Mel, comic lass from Mel and Sue, who people just about remember from daytime TV in the nineties, and who seem inundated with (mainly reality) TV offers. These dipsticks insisted that Scooch "tick so many Eurovish boxes". Oh yeah, just like Lordi did last year. Big Brovaz wouldn't have done anything. The track was okay but too so-so to cut it. None of the songs would have done bugger all. It's just great to see so many desperate has-beens humiliate themselves. You didn't get this in the old days.
Dipstick, it is John Barrowman to whom you refer and who, (and I know this from watching Al Murray's Happy Hour) is Scottish. (Have you not watched Torchwood?)
Yes, Barrowman, apologies for my horrific Woganesque blunder -- and he is of course Scottish-American (holds dual nationality) ; he only spent the first few years of his life in Scotland which probably explains why, culturally, he's about as Scottish as my Spanish teacher. (Who is Spanish, by the way.)
John Barrowman likes steak pie. pe ps oid ... What is "The Art of Tea"? ... (www.pepsoid.wordpress.com)
