Tunes and Memories

I heard " Pick Up The Pieces" by the Average White Band the other day on the radio. It immediately took me somewhere. I knew exactly where I was and who I was with, the first time I heard it back in 1974.

So, my question to you all is. What tunes immediately take you back to a time and place and what were you doing. Keep it clean please, well within reason...

"Tie Your Mother Down" Queen, Liverpool Empire Theatre, 1977. With a mate from School.

'Everybody Wants To Rule The World,' by Tears For Fears. Reminds me of dancing in the courtyard of my university halls of residence, at the end of year party, in the mid-eighties. And I can't listen to 'Beautiful Boy' by John Lennon without crying since I heard it played at the funeral of a friend's eight year old son.

Yeh Scratch, good choice. Seven Seas of Rye reminds me of a caravan holiday to Dovercourt with my parents!

Some good memories and some not so good Alibob. But music does take us somewhere thats for sure.

new jolono Plenty of memories of songs for all. My pop! when alive, could play piano, violin, and accordion. The dog would howl, top notes of violin. But signature tune, his favourite was 'In The Mood' was it by 'Glenn Miller'. Very gifted none of eight, had his talent. But he was taught and a big family after. We grew up with the 'Laughing Policeman' playing on old wind up gramophone, many, many. So on through modern times. julie x
Slightly obscure, but 'I Gotta Feeling' but Black Eyed Peas will always remind me of my time teaching in India. An unfortunate relation between tune and memory, I admit, but while the tune isn't great the memories are of a higher quality and significance.
Van Morrison's Brown Eyed Girl was my childhood song. And then it all unravelled in to no marks. Chumbawumba's 'Knocked Down' or whatever, marks a time when I was on my knees. And it somehow, however vile a song, dragged me up again. And then Sylvia Tella's 'Special Way' was the taste of clubbing for my sister and I. 'Man in the Mirror' Whacko Jacko when my bezzie died.

Julie, some great memories there. Vera, wow, Chumbawumba? Never thought that would be on a list. But thats the power of a tune.

It is vile. Horrific music. But soundtrack to my life at a futile time. (Head hang in shame)

We all have guilty pleasures Vera!

I'll think about the question, Joe, but I've got to say we saw AWB at Ronnie Scotts last year. An absolutely FANTASTIC night!

Agree Karl, seen them at the jazz cafe a few times, danced my socks off!

Yep blessing, that is a tune!

I dunno i hear songs that were made before i was born and can almost sense that era. I wanted to be a hippy for a while whenever i would hear The Doors!

A Hard Days Night / I'll Cry Instead by The Beatles. The ABC or Odeon cinema, York, 1964-ish. Four mop-tops, hundreds of deafening screaming girls. So clear in my memory. Odd thing is that I was two years old. Spoke to my mother about it many years later in adulthood and she didn't believe I could remember it. But I also remembered that we were with my cousin Jackie and that we accidentally walked into the Gents toilet in the rush for the exit, causing a minor stir. Funny what sticks with you.
