Shells On My Mind

There are shells -
there is wild and rushing sea,
but where are you, my darling,
I thought you belonged to me.
There are shells
on the pale mysterious shore -
offer back a childhood memory
that isn't mine, but yours.
I never wanted to posses you,
but thank you for your time,
I only wanted to protect you,
and I'm glad that you were mine.
There are shells
and the memory of small hands
that combed the beaches
for the treasure of the sands.
There are shells -
as I hold one to my ear -
sweet echo of your laughter,
and a tear...
I never wanted to distress you,
or steal your precious time,
I only wanted to protect you -
so glad that you were mine.
There are shells
and they bring me no regret -
I was loaned an angel,
and I won't forget...
there are shells.

Congrats on your cherry
Congrats on your cherry splash! Shells are, indeed, both calling cards to the restless soul and trinkets buried on time's shore. I like the sentimental strain pulsing through your poem. It is a nostalgic time warp to which we all want to teleport.

Hi Bee
Hi Bee
This is lovely, and reading it brings back happy memories of children by the sea. I never thought of the empty shell aspect, but in rereading it, it comes through.
