I walked away from childhood

when they changed my joy

to the currency of my nemesis

in amusement arcades

I walked away from learning

when I tasted the extraordinary

qualities of acid

and saw the world in action.

I walked away from convention

when I discovered my first boss

had quietly gone bust

and forgotten to pay my tax

but I am not a child

angrily riding his broken tricycle

towards the edge of a cliff

I embrace the power of love

and it’s better to struggle on

than fall into the cracks

unlike victimhood

failure is absolutely fine.

 

Who says there’s nothing

more decadent than a Sunday roast on a Monday

and why must we feel so appalled

when someone does things the wrong way?

 

Learning is for fools

commercial calculus the business

of snakes you won’t notice

till they’ve bitten you on the bum

and it’s too late to leave.

Determinism is for bruisers

destroyers of faith and beauty

the pursuit of scientific mastery

an algorithm that repeats on itself

a cosmic old fart.

 

Don’t be drawn in by their games

modern chaos is old school theory

and that’s just how they like it

the land time forgot.

 

Young reptiles will do anything

to stamp their mark on the quickest route

to the middle of the maze

they’ll make it look fun

with arrows on the grass

leading you nowhere for less

and you’ll even thank them

if you can find your way out.

 

Incarcerated

walking the wrong way

brings trouble

but we are free

to walk whichever way we please.

 

So let’s go the other way

let’s walk outwardly
