Jacob’s pillow and pillar

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
Deceitfulness had trouble bred
and so he from his brother fled,
lay down his head on stony pillow
– stone which became memorial pillar.
For God had sent a dream – He reigns,
had spoken promises – ordains;
and Jacob, shaken knew he too
should bow and trust what God could do.
The dream revealed a ladder stood
from earth to heaven, and, doing good
were angels sent from Him above
who kept His covenant of love.
In awe then of this God of grace
who’d called and spoken in that place;
and Jesus said He is that stair
in whom we can heaven’s bounty share.
But Jacob still had need of pruning,
in godly trust his heart atuning
to seek God’s help and pardon – may we
trust, follow Christ, completely, fully?
Genesis 28:10-22, John 1:51
