What is it about an Irish Catholic childhood which makes everyone who's had one want to write about it? This one's done extremely well, vividly descriptive, witty and quirky but with a kind-heartedness, neither sentimentally cloying nor vengefully exposing as some of this kind of writing. Friday fish fries, hard drinking, geography by parish and education by crotchety nuns, all makes for a memorable read.

Neil, Glad you enjoyed it. Its provenance? Most of the Irish I know are inately sentimental. They love to dwell on the past, over a few barley sandwiches. I suppose this is where it came from. Thanks for taking the time to comment. J.X.M
