My Heroic Self is Disappointed by Mark Brown
Loved the last line. Brilliant.

This really hooked me with the details about her uneaten lunch. Really pinned down a character for me there - a real 9 to 5er, whose job isn't great but is necessary.
Some bits I found overwritten eg. "a fist forming and unforming". And clothes torn? Seems melodramatic.
I'm also confused as to whether or not he really did here the sobbing. Was there someone out there or not? Need a little less ambiguity here, I feel.

I think you're right, to an extent Jon.
The melodrama is the imagining of the situation. All of these scenarios, waiting for a heroic man to save her...
If she was there and crying, the mundane reality most probably wouldn't afford any opportunity for the heroic self to make a unambiguous intervention.
In this case, the imagination provides a far more dramatic set of images than the actual reality could have.
Sound travels in funny ways I suppose, especially if it's windy.
Cheers,
