Garden of England (The)

God awoke one morning
with a smile upon his face.
He said, "I'll make a special something
to give meaning to this place.
I'll get a few ingredients
to help me make my plan,
and mix them very carefully
then give it all to man".
He gently picked some rolling hills
and placed them next to streams.
Then he chose some woolly sheep
the kind you find in dreams.
He found some trees and birds and bees
and placed them on the land.
Then put an orchard here and there
to make the place look grand.
He added hops and barley crops,
the smell of baking bread.
The fragrance of the flowers
must be added, then he said.
Last, but not least a heavy horse,
some sheep dogs and a plough.
He looked at his creation
"I think it's ready now".
He had made mankind a garden
and placed it in their care.
He hoped they would protect it
and find happiness in there.
Although progress may change it
it will still be heaven sent,
and will always be "England's Garden"
that mankind will know as Kent.
