julie burchill and the hijab
I actually agreed with her.Anyone else?
she said that the protective function of the hijab was hooey as most women are hurt by family members rather than ravening strangers.Just that it was an emblem of control .
She said that it made her bum look big.
Read a comment from one Muslim leader that, in the present climate, Muslim women in Britain should consider STOPPING wearing the hijab as it actually enhances the risk of being attacked by racist scum.
As I posted a couple of months ago on this: what is so shameful about the human form? I've just walked down town through Camden Market and the wondrous shapes, sizes, colours etc of the women (and the men) almost makes me believe there is a God. How drab it would have been if all the women were wearing the Hijab - as some were - or heaven forfend the Burkha. On the subject of men ogling women I'm reminded of the old joke: a man in a pub says to his mate "I stopped a woman from being raped today" "oh really" says his mate "what did you do" "I controlled myself" came the reply.
are they incompatible? All current religions oppress women discuss!!!! I agree with you about the miraculousness of things..
We do come to experience things from the other perspective in the end.Women get unnaposed Testosterone at the Menopause (and seriously contemplate 20 something blokes) And a lot of men get prostate trouble which makes them er have to experience a different sort of sexuality.
Seriously contemplate 20 something blokes? When? All at the same time? Can I watch? I get prostrate trouble, but that's only because I've drunk too much.
Yee ha! Golly and men feel like it a lot of their lives.Must be brain muddling. It is a wonder the poor dears have time to think about anything else. And they say men cant multitask!
Despite the link, I couldn't find the article, it just blinked at me and then moved on to an article on Robin Cook's funeral. So I can't say anything about Julie Burchill's words. I can say something on hijab though. Hijab basically means dressing modestly, and it goes for men as well, they are not meant to display those oh so sexy thighs, nor wear tight jeans that display the shape of their butts! As for women, hijab comes in many shapes and sizes, from ultra sexy, body clinging (hardly modest), to the frankly frightening. The reasons it's worn ranges from various interpretations of the Qur'an, through social pressure, to personal choice, or as an identity banner. I think the French and the Iranian governments have a lot in common in that they are both using women forcibly to advertise their own ideologies. Why is everyone so fixated on one article of clothing? Is there any other that raises temperatures to this extent, other than Chinese bras coming on to the European market?
I had a lively discussion about this with a Hijab wearing friend from Morocco.I can absolutely understand an idea about getting off the train of selling oneself as a sexual object it leaves so much time for other thingsI dont find it easy to get something which seems to be about external rules rather than individua l morality..But surely Islam is advertising its ideology by making a way of dress indicative of faith. My friend was saying that originally women in Islam were treated with honour and respect. When asked "who should I listen to?" The Prohet replied "Your Mother".what us western feminists see is not this.Sharia law does not seem to allow women to be even human.
Unfortunately my friend went off on a huge tangent about Jews being in charge of the USA and targeting Muslim babies etc.I ended up with a polite fixed expression of interest and I sought the nearest exit.
