Karen, Her Mother and the Boyfriend in red,
"Cementing the arguments, concrete¦round my head!
The unspoken word in squinting eye pockets,
The fading bird night-lights from electrical sockets,
"I look forward to sleeping! said Karen in crescendo,
"To wake up elsewhere! in hidden innuendo,
"And where would you¦rather¦be sleeping tonight?
"Away from pointed fingers, the anger, the plight!
"If this one wish were granted would you bother us more?
"If that wish were granted you could keep the keys in the door.
So blue phones are dialled with hasty queered fingers,
As they all sit round waiting, hot atmosphere's linger,
Till the silence is broken in halts and decays,
From the telephone wire on this Sat-of-day,
Mother and boyfriend will soon have their way,
But the smiles of this seven year old are held there with force,
For the thing Karen wanted was them just to divorce,
Or split or to leave or to hate one another,
But now there is no-one to turn to,
No aunt or step-brother,
Now there is silence as her fluffy bags are packed,
Fully of teddies and dollies with future intact,
A future they can speak of,
A future to love,
A future to think about,
Of grandmother's gloves,
The scent of them elderly,
The scent of them clean,
The dreams of another,
All shined with a sheen.
