A peculiar start which seemed at odds with the rest of the piece, but I enjoyed it as a whole - a picture of one very eccentric mohther whose odd ways were not overplayed but delicately(?) described.
Wasn't so sure about "choke of wind" I think, and had to think about "squinting on smoke" but it was a pleasure to read this character.

yeah I guess it is a bit peculiar! it's the start of a longer piece about bi-polar depression and SAD syndrome, and how it affects the family - hence the references to Winter. I might mix it up a bit more now. Thanks for your comments. Alicia

Hope you still go for the longer piece, and stick some of it on this website, I for one would be interested to read it.
