There Was Nothing
By little chilli

There was nothing
But the relentless rain
Dragging mascara tears down my cheeks
There was nothing
But the empty street
Stretching away from my still feet
There was nothing
But the wind whipping at my voice
Tearing my sobs away before I could hear them
There was nothing
But your retreating back
Already a million worlds away
There was nothing
But the sobs wracking my body
The empty feeling in the pit of my stomach
There was nothing
But the blank faces in windows
Audience to a drama nothing could explain
There was nothing
But your feet taking you further away
Each step stretching tight the chain between us
There was nothing
But your shadow flickering across street walls
And then jumping across gaping windows
There was nothing
But the moment when you paused
And then turned
There was nothing
But your eyes
As you gave me one last look
There was nothing
But the silence as your steps receded
Until you were gone. Gone.
Then, stood in the dripping rain
With the empty street echoing around me,
I began to understand what nothing was.
