A Chance Lost

My arms are falling down
As though they are burdened,
By all the weight behind your eyes
I see your need,
The sign flashing ‘last chance’
Yet I do not move
One of us is betrayed
Is it you,
With your misplaced faith
Or am I forsaken,
By my courage
I dare not embrace your pain
That sea of anguish
For fear of drowning
Knowing that I denied you
We share broken smiles
The time has passed
Still I reach out,
A shaky hand,
That you sting with rejection
Explaining you no longer desire,
A coward’s comfort
