From the bright world into the black
Entrance he disappeared,
But darkness was an old companion,
And besides, he prided himself
On his composure. Pupils growing
He drove ever inward, this right,
A left, left again, until, deep
Within the echoing maze he realized
He was lost. Setting his jaw,
He shouted for the Minotaur, its
Heated breath, foam-flecked nostrils.
He'd command the beast to lead
Him back to the light. Outside,
At each bellow, the crowd shivered
To imagine what dwelt within.
