all that fades away

take a moment to try & remember
the arguments that you had
with your first love---
try to remember those arguments,
those knock down-drag out fights
that you had with the next relationship
that ended up not working,
like the one before &
try really hard…
i mean,
reaaaaalllly hard
(with tightly closed eyes)
to remember
just what exactly was the problem,
way back when
basically the only responsibilities you had
were confined to getting through high school,
maybe working your first job,
maybe not crashing your first car or
your parent’s car, etc.
&
how do they all add up?
in retrospect, can you even remember any reason
that you fought with these once significant others?
can you remember the reasons that broke you?
can you remember at all?
it may even seem like complete nonsense,
all the time you spent to get to know these people,
just to toss it away,
all the time spent fighting,
just to walk away from the fight anyway---
all that
fades away,
all that
burns &
further age breeds further mistakes,
so much so,
that left in the headlights of death we all alone
stare, wondering if we had been warned,
wondering if anyone has said anything to us
before we wandered into the middle of the road &
if they had,
would we have listened anyway?
