Riots!
Riots on the streets of London.
I’m sorry, is this something new?
We’ve had enough demonstrations in this country
You’d think we’d have it down by now!
But this is different isn’t it David?
This criminality pure and simple
Well what the fuck do you expect?
When the law is ignorable
Do you really think that they would quarrel
Over the necessities of morals?
No!
So you’re gonna get to the bottom
Of what happened in Tottenham?
And how it spread through the rotten
Fibres of society?
And while you’re whining piously
Men are dying in the streets!
Why should they, the youth
The looters putting boots through windows
Why should they believe in consequence?
When stealing through expenses
Gives so little of the same?
Why should we the people,
Believe in your morality?
While you’re the one attending Murdoch’s party!
Should we believe you?
When you promise retribution for these shameful acts?
Of vandalism or like Mr Coulson
Does everyone deserve a second chance?
Be honest with your self-Davey
Is a badman stealing a TV
Really any different from Gerry K and his B & O LCD?
Please!
Do me a favour
Pick up a paper
This is learned Behaviour!
So when you talk of our morality
Of bringing back responsibility
Remember this
The fish rots from the head
So perhaps you should practice what you preach
And have your speech prepared
Before the riot starts instead

Highhat - Absolutely, what right do they have to criticise behaviour when it's they who have encouraged it through their own actions.

I agree that many politicians, journalists, industrialists etc etc have been behaving shamefully. I would make the point, though, that two wrongs don't make a right! Not everyone who has suffered (or, for that matter, everyone who disapproves of politicians etc) throws bricks through other people's windows, steals or sets fire to buildings (including those with flats above, where innocent people live). I think it likely that some - not all but some - of the participants joined in out of plain greed, or for kicks.

I totally agree with you. I think that there was absolutely no real political or ideological attitudes behind the riot, it was just people who wanted to smash things up and there is no excuse for it. But to hear Cameron talk about the moral decay on our society as if it was exclusive to these riots or at the very least the working classes in general that struck me and disingenuous and hypocritical. Thanks for reading!
