Instituitionalised Religion

The Church bells were ringing,
We knew we were late.
We ran across the yard
Because Mummy said God couldn't wait.
We took up our seats and the music started playing
The words didn't make much sense
Though I could hear what they were saying.
People held up their hands
as though they were flying,
And Daddy fell on the floor;
I thought he was dying.
The women stood round him and started their chanting,
And everywhere else the people were dancing.
Me and the others went off to Sunday School,
Where they taught us to say that we think God is 'cool'.
They asked us questions and if we showed God in a good light,
They gave us sweets, so that made it alright.
They told us we have to pray every night,
And that God is near,
Although he's out of sight.
I don't think he can hear me
Cause I pray every day;
'Why can't you please make this pain go away?'.
