The neighbourhood kids were hanging out in the park as usual. They were playing and talking to each other. Hamid ran up to one of the older ones, Sayid, and said:
' Your sister is ugly like a pig. and laughed at him.
' Shut up you little brat, show some respect, said Sayid and slapped Hamid on the face.
Hamid looked at him with an angry look and ran home. He told his older brother about what had happened:
- Your stupid friend Sayid hit me in the face.
- You probably disrespected him or something; he wouldn't have hit you otherwise. His brother responded.
Hamid ran to his uncle instead and told him about the incident:
- It doesn't matter, he shouldn't have hit you. His uncle answered.
They gathered up, brothers and cousins. They were all going after one person, Sayid. At night time, they started to look after him. He was walking down an ally, on his way home, when suddenly a group of twelve men gathered around him. They came from the front and the back, blocking every escape. Several of them had bats in their hands, one of them was Hamid. Sayid knew that he was in big trouble now. He became very afraid, afraid of the fact that they maybe would beat him to death. They slowly got closer and closer, nobody said a word. Sayid knew that nothing he could say to them would help. He was going around in circles, not knowing what to do or where to run. He panicked. Someone hit him from the behind; he turned his head and saw that it was Hamid. Sayid put his hand at the back of his head, he was bleeding. Hamid hit him again, this time he fell down to the ground. Everyone ran up to him, they kicked him and beat him with their bats. Sayid was laying with his face down to the ground, covering it with his hands. He could feel the taste of blood and gravel in his mouth. He could feel the kicks and the bats against his body, he screamed out in pain_
- AHHH!
Suddenly, everything got black. He was no longer conscious.
- Enough! Hamid's uncle yelled.
Everyone stopped. He put his hand on Sayids throat to check his pulse, he was still alive. They left him there, laying on the ground. His family found him the next day. He had been beaten very badly; they had to put him in the hospital.
This was only the first strike of many in the war between these two clans, the fight between the Rekis' (Hamid's relatives) and the Shadamzeis' (Sayid's relatives). The war wasn't only between the 16-20 year old brothers and cousins, it was also between the younger men and the adult men. The children fought against each other on the streets, throwing rocks at each other. The worst part was that these two families were neighbours; they lived right next to each other.
Nobody dared to leave their houses anymore, everyone involved was hiding. The Shadamzeis' had sworn revenge on the Rekis'. They would kill one of them because of what they had done to Sayid. They looked for someone everywhere, but they had all hidden. There was one man though, Joseph, who didn't care about their warnings. Joseph was the brightest one in the family; he a good future ahead of him. He had a good education and was about to take the exam. One afternoon, he went to the mosque to pray. When done praying, he started to walk home. A car drove by him, slowly. It stopped next to him and a group of eight men walked out of the car, with weapons; swords, axes and bats. They pushed him in to an ally nearby. He was petrified, didn't understand what was happening. They pushed him to the corner of the ally.
- Please don't do this, Joseph begged.
One of Sayids' brothers took his axe and swung it against Joseph. It had gone through his arm, he screamed out in pain. Blood was spurting out.
- AHHH! Please god, help me.
The brother hit him again. Joseph immediately fell down to the ground. He hit him again and again. It had cut through his leg and his throat. There was blood everywhere. Some of the other guys began to hit him with their weapons. He cried out in pain. They took a hard look at him, spat at him and then they went back to their car. Joseph was still laying there, still petrified, still not understanding anything. Everything was blurry; he had blood in his eyes. He could see the car fade away, as he fainted. He woke up, five minutes later. Everything was still blurry. He tried to stand up, but it hurt too much. He rose up again and leaned towards the wall this time. The pain was excruciating. He began to walk, his leg was still bleeding. He walked this way all the way to an ally near his home. The pain was too unbearable at this point; he immediately fell down to the ground. It was very close now, he had to get home. He struggled as hard as he could and finally got up. He continued walking and reached it after a while, finally at home he thought. He knocked on the door, but nobody opened. He knocked over and over again, but still no answer. Suddenly, the door opened, you could hear music and the laughter. People were dancing and having a good time in the yard, they were having a party. A little kid opened the door. He was happy at first, but as soon as he saw Joseph, he screamed of fear and started to cry. Joseph fell down to the ground, right in front of the door. Everyone in the yard gathered around him. His mother went outside to see what the commotion was about. As soon as she saw her son laying there, in a pile of blood, she panicked. She dropped down to the ground and crawled to him, putting her arms around him. She was screaming and crying, praying to god:
' Please god, don't let him die.
Some of the older men called on a taxi, to take Joseph to the hospital with. They carried him to the cab and followed him to the hospital. You could hear his mother scream as the car drove away. Everyone was horrified and shocked. There was blood everywhere.
A couple of days had gone by and the Rekis' wanted revenge. The wise men of the clans (also known as the Whitebeards) knew that something had to be done, so they called for a meeting. The head of the wise men were Hajji-Mohammed (the Rekis') and Hajji-Shahab (the Shadamzeis').
- This war between our two clans can not continue, too many people are going to be killed. Said Haji-Mohammed.
- I agree, this has gone out of control. Haji-Shahab responded. We have to tell all of them that this has to stop. It has gone from one slap to assault and ended up in murder. It's too much.
- Then it is settled, we shall talk to the youths about this and bring it to an end.
Haji-Mohammed said and shook hands with Haji-Shahab.
The wise men of the clans spoke to the youths and told them that they should stop this mess, before it goes any further.
- We have to stop this now, before every man in our clan dies. What will come after that, the women and the children? The wise men said to the men in their clans.
Everyone agreed, they wanted the war to stop. Although there were some men in the Rekis' that still wanted to avenge the death of Joseph. Some of them planned doing this, but it never occurred. The clans continued living on, avoiding each other as often as they could. The people who once were friends, would forever become enemies. Even though they had sworn peace. Even though the war was over.
