A lifetime of summers
and 20th century fireworks
had not lost their warmth
as the old man stroked her arm
underneath the blanket
tucked into the wheelchair.
It is humbling to watch this love
from the corner of exam room 24
As her cells divide and defy her
As he tenderly calls her Honey.
I can only hope to one day have
my heart full enough with someone else
Enough to love them for my whole life
To love them as they
leave.
