Bursting from sleep in a quiet room
A cold sweat under the burning moon.
Gather the sheets around your knees
Coax your heart to be calm, please.
Collect your thoughts before they scatter
to convince your mind that old things matter.
Close your eyes and let air in
Breathe it out, and begin again.
You swear that under your skin you feel the
terrible touch, that warmth must be real.
Be still, now, you’re in your bed
And this monster sleeps inside your head.
The thoughts that pelt your heart like hail:
“You will never finish chasing your own tail.”
