"Cold as ice," he shivered, lying under the tree in the mound of
dry, dead leaves, old newspapers and plastic bags. "Summer in my head,
"he muttered reaching into his trousers trying to catch the lice that
were giving him hell this morning. Feeling the dead weight of his
friend near him he poked him roughly in the ribs. "Move your lazy ass,
we have to find something to eat before the vultures get it all, come
on, move!"
"Jesus, quit that and let me sleep, bad wine, " Cales groaned.
Ronald opened one red eye balefully, "wine, what wine?" He sat up on
one elbow grabbing Cales by the front of his shirt. "Come on, what
happened to the wine you greedy old skunk bag,
" You couldn't wait to guzzle it down, could you, give you a finger you
take the whole bloody arm!"
There could be no more sleeping today as the people were already
rushing around even on the road in front of their bed.
Cales urinated against a tree.
"You want some?" He asked a young lady who looked at him for what he
thought a bit too long. I've got plenty, and my friend there he will be
glad to oblige."
Ronald burst into hysterical laughter showing broken stubs of blackened
teeth and grabbing his crotch invitingly."Yeh, yeh, nice present for
the nice lady, come to papa!" They enjoyed it even more when the young
lady trying not to listen and with her nose in the air almost ran from
the area.
Feeling a bit better and their simple toilet completed they began their
morning rounds.
The dustbins behind the fast food restaurant had already been picked up
and the gates shut securely to keep out the scavengers.
Ronald slammed his fists into Cales' head. "See what happen now you
crazy scumbag hogging all the wine and getting up late?" He kicked the
gate, "Now we can't even find anything to eat!"
Cales hurried to put some distance between himself and Ronald. "Maybe
we could still try the Chinese restaurant, it is still early maybe they
haven't passed there yet." Muttering about lazy sleepers and greedy
drunkards Ronald started walking in the direction of the Chinese
Restaurant.
Cales spotted an empty bottle in the berm and rushed to pick it up, he
stuffed it quickly inside his coat hoping that Ronald would not
notice." What is that, are you trying to hold out on me again? You know
what will happen if I catch you doing that. It is hard living on your
own out here, you know that but if you want to keep everything for
yourself then you can piss off right now!"
"It is only a cola bottle maybe we could get something for it."
"Okay but think about what I said!"
Peeping through the gates of the Wing Song the two comrades waited for
the chance to raid the dustbins.
They were lucky.
"Man, these Chinese people can really cook!" said Cales
Ronald rubbed his bulging stomach and let out a belch full with the
rich flavour of pork and garlic.
Cales, picking his teeth with an old matchstick could only nod in
satisfaction. "That is what you call eating!"
Pulling a battered old tin from inside his coat he rolled a very thin
cigarette from his store of butts and leaning against a convient
dustbin in the park they relived their feast and enjoyed their first
smoke of the day.
The need for a drink was becoming urgent so they began on the serious
business of the day. They strolled along the road picking up anything
that was worth a bit of money, if you knew the right places to
go.
Today lady Luck was kind for the second time and they could finally
afford two bottles of cheap wine.
"Yes," said Cales opening his filthy coat to enjoy the early spring
sunshine. "This my man, is the life."
The aroma of cheap wine, garlic and urine ensured them of complete
privacy in their own little piece of heaven
