A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
I shall reward thee for a penny for thine thoughts
King Penda said.
“Thou keep making false promises
Steal my thoughts
Mine children are famished!”
The mayor of Painge refused.
The Croydon canal flew murky
As a soup gone wrong
Under their feet.
Disease de jour was cholera
Though syphilis drove many up to wall:
the sailors
harlots,
Queens and Kings
Ladies and Noblemen
No body was immune to dark seduction of syphilis.
King Penda escaped the Syphilis
Only narrowly
Drunk pale ale
Day and night
But he was parched
He needed water
And his judgement was poor
Was caught many times
With his pants down
Mounting his horse
Mistaking it as his dear Queen.
The mighty Penda
The founder of dear penny
Was now a disgrace.
He needed a solution
To his ill disposition soon.
So he tried again
The mayor of Painge:
The mighty alchemist
Who turned base metal to gold
For his Saxon King
Many times before.
“Make thy water pure again
For I will reward you for a shiny penny!”
"I won't fall thine false words
Nay no more! Show me the shiny penny
I will make the water pure for thee!"
So the Saxon King showed his mayor
The shiny penny.
The alchemist put the purifying
Agent in the Croydon canal
And made the water purer than
Gold.
The King and his subjects drank
Pale ale less than before
And this where the word a penny for your thoughts
Comes from .
