No it doesnt. Saute onions slowly in a pan or as I did in the oven till soft and slightly browned. With oven not too high you can ignore it for a bit.

I just made myself the most glorious onion soup. I found I had a few onions so some cut up are in the freezer and the rapidly going stale Deli bread went on top of the soup with some fab soft cheese that wouldnt keep long.
