Round Ireland with a Fridge (2010)

‘Round Ireland with a Fridge’ (2010) BBC 4, directed by Ed Bye and starring Tony Hank (or Tony Hawk, I can’t read my own writing) as the mad kind of guy that makes a bet that he can hitch-hike around Ireland with a fridge. This is what he does and he lives to tell the tale. Not only does he live to tell the tale he writes a book about it. He makes a BBC drama about it and he gets the girl. Whether he actually gets the girl or whether he just made her up a girlfriend, as we were prone to do when we were about 13 (or 50) is a moot point. She works for the local radio station that follows Tony’s travels around Ireland. They make him a minor celebrity;aka Fridge man. The Irish take his madcap jinks to their heart and Tony learns a valuable lesson about himself. Like David Carridine when he could take the pebble from the master’s hand he was able to step into the larger world and kick ass. It was meant to be a comedy so we had the usual suspects of Irishmen lining up like leprechauns on the Guiness to spin us their patter. Does it work? Nah, sounds like the same old bollocks to me.
