He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not is a great film but Amelie is better (both starring Audrey Tautou). The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Good Fellas, Carlito's Way and The Godfather trilogy. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Shrek and Lost In Translation. One Flew Over The Coooo's Nest. For animation mostly Manga like Akira and Ghost In The Shell.

Gosh, "Beautiful Thing" was lovely - every time someone mentions Mama Cass I have to think about that film. Also liked "Maurice" and "The Wedding Banquet" a lot. More favourites (in no particular order): Red Sorghum Picnic at Hanging Rock Don't look now Jules et Jim Festen The Ring trilogy Breaking the Waves Carrington Passion Fish Barry Lyndon Harold and Maud Every now and again there's something good on TV as well, such as the "Decalogue" films, "Heimat", or more recently "Tipping the Velvet/Fingersmith". My all time favourite though is "Shooting the Past" by Stephen Poliakoff - watched it at least a dozen times now and still think it's absolute genious. [%sig%]

I tried to get "Goodbye Lenin" from my local Blockbuster at least half a dozen times but since they only had one poxy copy it was always rented out. I can only hope I'll manage to watch it some time in the future. Really pisses me off, that - they've got umpteenth copies of all kinds of cheap crap and diversity is obviously not something they put their money on. Sign of the times, I suppose... [%sig%]

Hi RIG - I don't like Rhodie as it makes me think of you lugging amps and speakers about - I'd prefer Isla (shortning of Island instead) - just read your post << Smiley: I love Audrey Tautou she is very gorgeous imo...I liked Amelie but he loves me he loves me not is still my fave between the two. How could I forget LOTR trilogy when I was there opening night for all three Each time I walked out I was like THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! >> Yes, Audrey is gorgeous and she is one of the few people who could get away with being so ruthless (as she was in 'He Loves Me') and still manage to make me wish I was the doctor ;o) LOTR really was an amazing achievement - I was convinced that no-one could ever portray the characters on screen and make me feel that they were not pale shadows of the ones that had long since become dear friends in the land of my imagination... I was never more pleased to be wrong! By the way - I was surprised that you did not seem to be looking forward to the 'Fantastic Four'. While they have never been my favourite Marvel characters I have always liked them and I think that their powers will be perfect for the Hollywood special effects (which is all that impresses me about Hollywood nowadays). Which reminds me - if anyone really thinks that any of the Star Wars films rate in the worst film category then they can't have seen many films! I lauged to myself today because I realised that last time I posted I had put Shrek in my favourites without really thinking it was a cartoon - somehow it had amalgamated with the Austin Power's type films and become a comedy... I hadn't thought of it as an animation :o)

Manon De Source/Jean De Florette. Taxi Driver. Mean Streets. Monty Python's The Life of Brian. (Surely one of the greatest lines ever delivered in cinematic history, 'He's not the Messiah, he's a very very naughty boy.) Casino. Anything with Audrey Tatou. (Those eyes, those eyes!) My summer of love. Emily Blunt. I have never seen anyone do sultry like that. Smokin'!

Ones which come to mind: Amelie Chocolat Secretary Pulp Fiction LOTR trilogy - well, all right, the first one Bend It Like Beckham Rain Man Close Encounters The Lavender Hill Mob Billy Elliott East Is East The Truman Show (Jim Carrie can actually be good when he's not pulling faces) I generally don't go for war films, westerns, sci-fi and "adventure", there's one or two French films should be in that list but I can't remember the titles.

I watched a double bill of Deepthroat and The Devil in Miss Jones in a crummy, run down, movie theatre in Weston Connecticut in the late seventies, and I've got to say I had never been so bored before in my life. In fact I was that bored I actually got up and walked out half way through the third showing.

Cold Fever - it's an Icelandic road movie with a Japanese protagonist. It's brill. Movie Days - also Icelandic and funny, moving and strangly dark. The City of Lost Children - This by the same director as the next too. All of them are wonderful, dark, light, imaginative, beautiful to look at, funny, wonderful. I know I could never fall in love with someone who didn't like Amelie. Amelie - oh this film is wonderful. Work.of.art. A Very Long Engagement - some of the most affecting war scenes ever, because the director brings it down to individuals. In those big war films, you see loads of people dying, but you never know their back stories, so you can't connect. This film is brilliant for connection. Strictly Ballroom - a work of stagering genius because it manages to be a satire, a rom-com and a dance spectacle in one. I love the fact that it doesn't linger over bits that other films spend a whole film on. Like when the geeky girl is pushed out of the way and made not to dance with him by the other women, instead of it taking the whole film for him to get back with her, he just runs of straight away to find her. Great. Also, most of the characters are shown to do bad things because they are afraid, not because they are bad. And it has the best motto in it: A life lived in fear is a life half lived. I LOVE that film. When Harry Met Sally - not cheesy or naff, but funny and fairly true on men/women in places. Not just a chick-flick. Every boyfriend/husband I've had liked this film, and I'm positive they were not just saying that for my benefit. The Third Man - it's just so good. It pulls you in, twists you about, looks good, and keeps you thrilled till the end. Casablanca - Funny, sad, sentimental, beautiful to look at. Good tunes. Love it. Highlander - I saw it too young to hate it, and love it. Sword play, bad Scottish accents and a Queen soundtrack. What more can you want? Twelve Monkeys - Bruce Willis, strange futuristic world, present day, conspiracy theories, Terry Gilliam. Brotherhood of the Wolf - camp, French, my-kind-of-scary (i.e. not very) *and* a bit of marshal art kicking thrown in. Brill. 13 going on 30 - yep. I know what you may say, but I love this film. I like it because she gets everything she thought she wanted when she was a geek, and it turns out to be not that great. I like that. I like the 80s soundtrack (what other film has Jesse's Girl by Rick Springfield and Vienna by Billy Joel in the same sequence?) I like Jennifer Garner too, because she is pretty and is very long and has a wholesome hair cut. Mary Poppins - the songs, the dancing, the moral 'enjoy your life while you can!', Dick Van Dyke. Perfect. Saturday Night Fever - but only the 18 - not the PG cut. Such a good film, and dark. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - calm, beautiful, lots of kung fu. Makes me want to drink green tea and weild a sword. I like films. I've probably missed out millions I love, just because I love so many. I go to the cinema every week if I can (on orange wednesday it's dead cheap).

Saturday Night Fever is a definite favourite and quite a social commentary on the times. Very dark. But the Highlander!? I know, I know, loads of people love this film. I didn't see it until I was about, oh, 27, maybe older (I somehow managed to avoid it for all those years!) and I thought it was just pants. With skidmarks. Christopher Lambert (is that his name?) is just such a terrible actor. I watched Vercingetorix, starring him; it was pants as well. I'm glad so many people mentioned Amelie. Such a lovely, happy film. Chocolat is great, too. So is Edward Scissorhands. All three are whimsical films, but with great inner substance.

Ferg, do you know where I can get a copy of City of Lost Children that isn't dubbed? Jumanji. All About Eve. Farenheit 451 - this grows on me more and more. Central Station - always makes me cry. A Brazilian road movie about a woman who sells a homeless boy and then rescues him to take him back to his father.
