N'AWLINS.
Having surveyed the paper and seen that Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Cuba have offered aid, I think what the fuck is going on? The only city I would ever visit (If I would fly) would be New Orleans is; in every way gone. Bummer! 250.000 to Texas about the same to Arkansas many saying that they will never return. This is Biblical stuff. I see on another thread about Fats Dominoe, thankfully he's safe, but what about The Meters? Surely one of the great funk bands of all time. Is Joseph Modeliste OK? And if any drummer who has heard what he does on Cissy Strut and not wanted to eat his own eyes in frustration - then you ain't funky.
Ah, The Meters. What a rhythm section.
What about Allan Toussaint?

I got an email from a friend in the area just 20mins ago. It appears that the French Quarter and the Garden District are largely undamaged. It was the Lake Ponchartrain levees that broke, and they are north of the city centre, which is on the Mississippi levee side. They apparently held up.
It's still a catastrophe and when it's all rebuilt (I never thought ofr a second that it would be abandoned) it will have lost some of it's character.
Audobon Zoo apparently came through with only 3 deaths out of all the animals. They'd been preparing for something like this for years, which makes it all the more frustrating that the US government *hadn't* been.
So, as one letter-writing in the Independent asked, are we going to have a war on global warming now? I suppose not, since they can argue it would have happened anyway.
There's lots of photos here, some very comforting ones among the sadder stuff.

My cousin's email is still not working. She teaches at the U of New Orleans and uses the school email system. I guess the University computers are all down. When I send an email to her address, it is bounced as 'no such person.' I'm sure they got out, but I'm surprise about the email not working.
The university is on the north side of the city, close to Lake Pontchartrain so I guess it was affected by the floods, James.
Thanks for the link, Missi. S'good to see lots of things still standing, and lots of people sorting themselves out.
Thanks Miss Peepee. It does bring it home when you see images of the tragedy. What's that about a picture representing a thousand words? I wish I wasn't such a woos about flying.
