Identity Cards

Could that really work in England? Aren't we full of the perpetually absent-minded? Or is that just me? I've seen those films from other countries where they say, 'Can I see your registration, Sir?' and the chap flips down his sun visor and extracts the relevant piece of paperwork. Whereas I have no idea were my driving licence is ' I have to send off for a new one each time I get three points. My passport is left in the flight bag in the porch from one year to the next so that's okay. But any other form of identification is just asking to be lost.
I do know where the Birth Certificates are though. David convinced me to put them in that little fire-proof safe he bought from the gadget magazine. The whereabouts of its key, however, is a complete blank.
And the kids just complicate things. They've both got a National Health number but I can only find one of their National Insurance numbers. Maybe that's why I only get child benefit for the one¦ I thought it was just for the eldest. I don't know! I don't know how they got the national health numbers let alone the national insurance numbers! You give birth ' you don't sleep for a year and a half ' you figure someone else is going to do the frigging paperwork¦¦¦¦..

Ah, but the beauty of the national identity register is you won't need to take your card with you, you'll only have to take your fingerprint with you. Remind them of that when they try to charge you £300 for one.

I like the idea of an ID card that can store all my info in one place. There is no point if you have to have a driving licence etc AS WELL. Why can't the card act like a sort of C drive and you upload everything onto it - credit cards, Nat I number and passport. It would also act as an MP3, mobile phone and door key. I don't mind the idea, but the £30 charge is out of order...and it should have benefits for the normal person - like as I mentioned centralising NI card, Driv lic etc.

Ahhh - so we're just being fingerprinted and put on a great big database. I see. Bit slow off the mark on this one, I'm afraid (you're right BBF it's the Lou-Lag®). Bit of a cheek to ask us to pay separately though. Why don't they just take it from tax as usual? Otherwise, they'll send me a bill, I'll lose it, I'll become a non-person...
Do you think you could get away with burning off your fingerprints before going to get one?

Take up rock climbing, wearing contact lenses, and growing a beard. You'll be imune.

That's genius, maddan. I was going to suggest plastic coated finger tips like The Penguin wears for his inpenetrable disguise as P.N Guin in Batman The Movie...
I dunno about the beard bit, I'm sure the government will have facial hair as grounds to hold you without charge somewhere in the new terrorism bill. Harry Kerdean
You lose their N.I. numbers? I lose them!
