"I think we need to evangelise the young.
I think we need to sting them into life and
astonish them by setting fire to them
with the holy spirit..."

I suppose setting it alight is better than drinking it and it should be spectacular... especially at night!

There's nothing more mind-teasing than the incomprehensible eagerly avowed -

this reminds me of a tv programme i watched where an inner-city vicar was trying to reengage with the community - he rebranded his type of church as "church lite" but none of the regular parishioners got it and it was vetoed. good stuff. Juliet

Thanks for the flag M and all the comments. I actually sat down to write some 'holy week' poetry but this came out instead... Long ago in my diocese of A&B, the Bishop introduced a Church pastoral programme called "Renew" although perhaps it would have better been named "Deflate". Someone composed the most abysmal song - the Renew song and I remember the lines - Set us on fire Lord Like your first disciples ... and use us as you used them to Renew the face of the earth... It was truly horrible and had a shrieky yukky tune as well. The Church likes to blame "SECULARISATION" for its failings today. This mythical dragon of Secularisation is not responsible. One real problem is that "Fortress Parishes" evolved to fulfill important social needs of the time. Those social needs no longer exist and yet we are still clinging onto the shell of an outmoded vessel. The idea that people were more gravitated to Faith 50 years ago than they are today is twaddle. People went to Church for a something else - a social structure that no longer exists and is no longer needed. And then tries to reverse this fairy-tale trend by using secular imagery on posters (I've done this myself recently) or other supposedly contemporary icons or music genres to woo the young. Or shock them. Thats where the "setting fire to them" joke comes from. You need the next line to sort of explain it. Anyway a lot of Churchy-new-iconography-in-postmodernity tends to be patronising... rant over. Incidently it uses a different voice to what I am used to - not sure the poem works but there you go! jude visit my boring website http://www.judesworld.net
