yes, absolutely beautiful. But what does the title mean please?

I took the title to mean that Man had ruined a beautiful part of the landscape by building on it, a factory, shops, houses, whatever. I guess stones just don't grow - not like grass and plants. Anyway I might be wrong - just my take. Thanks 27, for making me think about it. Tina
